We can help you find the right style of frames for your face shape, best color for your skin tone and the best frame width so that your glasses or sunglasses are comfortable. It all starts with finding the right size glasses for your face in millimeters. 

The fit width includes the width of the left and right lenses along with the bridge. A narrow fit number is 117mm or less. A medium width number typically ranges from 118 to 124mm, and a wide width is anything over 124mm. 

If you aren’t sure what width you need, we will measure across your eyes in order to help determine the correct frame width.

Choosing the Correct Frame Shape

The next step to getting the best eyeglass frames for your needs involves looking at the shape of your face. This is because certain styles of frames will look better on certain facial shapes. 

For example, if you have a square shape, we recommend choosing frames with oval, round or wayfarer shaped lenses. If you have a heart-shaped face, we recommend cat-eye, rectangle or wayfarer shaped lenses.

Choosing the Right Frame Color

Lastly, it’s time to choose the best frame color for your skin tone. Of course, you can always choose a color or a print pattern that best matches your unique style, but certain frame colors look better on certain skin tones than others.

For example, if you have an oval face, cat-eye, rectangle, square or wayfarer shaped lenses will look good on you. Of course, you can try on various frame styles to determine the best one for your particular style.

Next, Minderman will help you pick out a pair of frames in your preferred style and width that need slightly smaller lenses. For example, if you currently have large, square lenses, they could be ground down to fit a pair of frames that need rectangle lenses, round lenses or oval lenses. If you have cat-eye shaped lenses, they could be ground down to fit oval or rectangle lenses.

When you think about getting new frames, you may be worried that you have to leave your glasses at our office while your new lenses are fitted to the frames. Once you have your new frames, Minderman will remove the lenses from your old frames, precisely measure them then measure the new frames in order to determine how to reshape your current lenses. After all the measurements have been taken, your current lenses will be ground down to fit your new frames. In many instances, this takes less than an hour. 

Once your current lenses are inserted into your new frames, we will test the fit and adjust the frames so that they are completely comfortable. This means that you can walk out of our office with your new frames the same day.

An optometrist is the one who determines your prescription. However, an optician is the one trained in customizing your eyeglass lenses. Part of the process of creating glasses for you entails a tinting process that allows you to have more options than just gray or brown tint. The process isn’t as simple as merely applying a dye to your lenses.

About Lens Tinting Methods

Lenses aren’t tinted the same, but one of the more common methods is a heat treatment. The tinting process depends on the material of the lenses. Plastic is a common material for glass lenses nowadays, but they’re not always the most durable. A person may choose high-index lenses, polycarbonate, or Trivex lenses. Although polycarbonate is durable, you can also get Trivex which is lighter weight and much more durable. These lenses were originally used by helicopter windshields in the military.

All of these options require a heat-treatment process. The process can be tinted through a heat treatment applied to the specially formulated dye. The heat is nearly 200 degrees Fahrenheit and is applied after the lenses are submerged in a dye. The darkness of the color determines how long the lenses must be submerged. Any color is possible with this process, but most colors won’t last as long as a traditional sunglass-shade dye.

Choosing the Right Frames

A square face is often characterized by a strong jaw line, a broad forehead, and a wide chin and cheekbones. The width and length of the face are close to being equal. Frames should be selected to make the face look longer and to soften the square angles of the face. Choose frames that are slightly curved (like an oval shape) and that have more horizontal than vertical real estate.

Oval Face

The oval face is identifiable by its balanced proportions. The forehead is slightly wider than the chin and cheekbones are high. Frames should complement the natural proportions of the oval. Choose frames that are wide or wider than the broadest part of the face and that follow your brow line. Often, diamond or rectangular shapes work best for oval shapes.

Oblong Face

Although fairly similar to an oval shape, an oblong face is longer than it is wide. The ideal frames will shorten the face by creating a break in the length of the face. Choose frames that have depth and a low bridge to shorten the nose. Try frames that are round, deep, have low-triangle shapes, or that have strong vertical lines.

Round Face

A round or full face is characterized by having the same width and length. For round faces, frames that add length to the face often work best. Frames that lengthen the face are typically angular, narrow and are wider than they are deep. It is best to avoid round style frames as these will exaggerate the roundness and curves of the face.

Heart Shaped Face (or Base-up Triangle)

A heart shaped face looks like a heart or a triangle with the point facing down. The forehead is very wide and cheekbones are high while the face narrows towards the chin. Counterbalance the narrow chin by choosing frames that are wider at the bottom. Generally, light colored and rimless frames work best, although aviator, butterfly and low-triangle styles also work well.

Base-down Triangle Face

A base-down triangle face has a narrower forehead with full cheeks and a broad chin. To offset a broad chin, select frames that widen at the top. Great selections include frames that have heavy color accents and detail on the top part of the frames. Cat-eye shapes also work well to add width and emphasize the narrow upper part of the face.

Diamond Face

A diamond shaped face is often characterized by high, dramatic cheekbones with a narrow eye line and jaw line. This shape is the rarest of all the shapes. Oval frames that are soft in style typically work best to highlight the eyes and cheekbones. Select frames that have detailing, distinctive brow lines, are rimless or a cat-eye shape for best results.
